Israel will boost its long-arm strategic capabilities with the reinstatement of one of its Dolphin-class submarines that underwent an unprecedented structural overhaul.

The submarine, one of three currently in the navy, arrived in Israel in 1999 and is the first to undergo the mid-life renovation. The Israeli submarines, which were purchased from Germany, have an expected lifespan of 30 years.이 잠수함은 해군이 보유한 세 척 중 1999년 인도된 것으로, 세 척중 첫번째로 내구 연한 중간 개보수 작업에 들어갔다. 이스라엘 잠수함들은 독일에서 구매됐고 내구연한은 보통 30년이다.

The submarine was taken out of service almost two years ago but the renovation was a carefully guarded secret in the navy so Israel’s enemies would not know that one of its three submarines was out of commission. 이 잠수함은 2년 전 임시 퇴역하여 극비리에 개보수 작업을 받아 왔다. Now that it is heading back to sea and ahead of the graduation of the navy’s 100th Submariner Course, The Jerusalem Post was invited Sunday to tour the shipyard in Haifa where the submarine is being reassembled. 이제 이 잠수함은 해군 잠수함 승무원 양성학교의 100기 졸업식을 앞두고 다시 취역한다. 예루살렘 포스트는 이 잠수함이 재건된 하이파에 있는 조선소에 초청을 받았다.

“Every vessel that comes in to the shipyard for maintenance and upgrades comes out with improved capabilities,” Col. Eli Shouach, commander of the navy’s shipyard, told the Post. “There are a select number of countries around the world which can independently renovate a submarine. Israel’s submarines are the military’s most expensive platform and are often referred to as the country’s second-strike doomsday weapon due to their reported ability to fire cruise missiles tipped with nuclear warheads. 이스라엘의 잠수함들은 보유 무기들 중에 가장 비싸며, 핵탄두를 장착한 크루즈 미사일을 발사할 수 있는 능력 때문에 두번째의 중요한 전략무기로 비견된다.

The three Dolphin-class submarines in the navy’s fleet are called Dolphin, Leviathan and Tekuma and are believed to be some of the most advanced diesel-electric submarines in the world. Maj. Doron Bareket, the officer in charge of the upgrades, said that the renovations include dismantling all of the submarine’s valves, pipes and sonar systems. The engine is also taken apart, cleaned and reassembled. (잠수함 업그레이드 작업의)책임자인 도론 바레킷 소령은 이 개보수작업엔 잠수함 내의 모든 밸브, 파이프, 소나 시스템의 해체 작업도 포함돼 있다고 말했다. 엔진 또한 분해 소제되고 재조립됐다.

The submarine’s body is also cleaned and cracks in the hull are welded back together. 잠수함의 동체도 소제되고 선수부의 금간 부분도 용접 봉합됐다.

The entire upgrade is costing the navy close to NIS 100 million, the most expensive upgrade the shipyard has ever carried out. 이스라엘 해군이 이 수리작업에 들인 비용은 1억달러 정도이며 지금까지 이 조선소가 했던 모든 작업중에서 가장 비용이 많이 든 작업이었다.

With the expected arrival of two additional submarines in the coming years, the shipyard is also undergoing renovations to accommodate the new vessels and building new hangars, some of which will be protected from potential Hezbollah and Syrian missile attacks. 앞으로 두 대의 잠수함이 추가로 들어옴에 따라, 조선소도 새로운 정박 및 헤즈볼라와 시리아의 잠재적인 미사일 공격을 막기 위한 격납시설을 짓는 등 개보수 작업을 실시하고 있다.

The Shayetet’s operations are almost all classified.
