재미동포 3백여명은 28일 오바마 미국대통령에게 한반도평화정책을 촉구하는 영문으로 된 공개서한을 발표하면서 정전협정을 평화협정으로 전환할 것을 강조했다. 전문을 게재한다.(민족통신 편집실)

Dear President Obama;

Please accept our sincere congratulations on your brilliant re-election to the White House. We the Korean Americans, one and half million strong and increasingly becoming clearly visible and significant component of American population, take a special pride in your triumphant re-entry to the nation’s highest office. It is not only because every one of us feel special and warm ethnic affinity toward you but also due to the fact that we have worked hard in supporting your candidacy during both of your campaigns.

However, it would be less than honest if we fail to point out our profound disappointment upon your Korea peninsula policy during first term of your presidency. Numerous extremely dangerous and provocative military maneuvers had been carried out jointly with South Korea practically at the door steps of North Korea precipitating several incidence of exchange of fires and even a sinking of a warship, blatant disregard of the two historic accords reached between the two Koreas during the tenures of two South Korean governments previous to the current conservative Lee, Myungbak regime, which you supported in spite of its near-nonexistent popular support, and finally cancelling of a promised humanitarian aid to the impoverished North Korea at the last minute, citing firing of a single satellite missile by the country, etc.

However Mr. President a new era is opening in Korean peninsula; there is a young leader with proven propensity for change in North Korea, on December 19, South Koreans will have a chance to effect a regime change replacing current conservative regime with a progressive one attuned to the concept of peaceful re-unification of the peninsula and above all, your historic inauguration, not just as a new U. S. president but as one peace Nobel Laureate!

Mr. President, we beseech you to become a president during your second term to be remembered as one who helped to bring the peace and re-unification to the Korean peninsula; the president who signed the peace treaty with North Korea thus ending the half century old enmity with our northern half; the president who had withdrawn 28,000 U.S.  forces  from the  Korean peninsula, thus laying the ground work for the enduring peace in Northeast Asia among the countries of two Koreas, Japan, China and the United States, a country thus once more can be called as the “Shining City over the Hill”

오바마 미합중국 대통령에게 보내는 공개서한

오바마 대통령 귀하,

오바마 대통령께서 재선에 당선된 것을 진심으로 축하드립니다. 우리 재미 코리안들은 이제 인구도 1백50만명으로 눈에 띄게 늘어나 미국사회에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 그리고 대통령께서 오바마 행정부 2기를 맡는 재선에 빛나는 승리를 기록하게 된 것을 무궁한 긍지로 여기고 있습니다.

우리는 또 소수민족으로서 귀하의 재선을 남달리 생각하고 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 우리들은 귀하의 첫 선거와 이번 선거에서도 적극적으로 지지성원하여 왔습니다.

그렇지만 솔직하게 말하자면 귀하의 첫 임기 기간에 보여준 한반도 정책에 대해서는 실망하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 왜냐하면 한반도 남녘에서는 한-미합동군사훈련이 끊이지 않았고, 이 훈련들은 끝내 북한을 자극하여 한반도 위기는 전쟁 일보직전까지 갔었습니다. 이로 인해 김대중 정부와 노무현 정부가 북한 지도자와 이룩한 화해협력 기조는 이명박 정권에 의해 사라지고 전쟁의 먹구름으로 남북한 동포들은 물론 우리 재미동포들과 해외동포들 모두가 걱정에 휩싸였던 것입니다. 여기에 미정부는 평화를 지지하는 것 보다는 긴장을 조성하였다며 평화를 사랑하는 우리 재미동포들은 유감으로 생각하게 되었습니다. 게다가 북에 대한 인도적인 지원마저 취소되었습니다.
